We get many calls about animals and insects burrowing into your roofs crawl space. We get these calls all throughout the year, however, we usually get these calls specifically during certain times of the year. Many times, these calls are the last resort in which our customers are furious because it affects their roof and home as well as their time. Raccoons, birds and bats, and insects are of the many types of species that hibernate and take up residence in your home.

With that said, we’ve created a list of dangers and how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

1. Not knowing what sort of animal or insect is within your home. Here in Lexington, we want you to be able to feel safe. Determining the habits, like when it’s active, will allow us to help repair your roof and keep it from happening again.
2. Leaving garbage cans open. Animals being able to get into your garbage is always a hassle. We know because we’ve been there. Using a metal garbage can helps, along with a tight fitting lid. This helps to keep wild animals and insects away.
3. Not checking for openings in your roof. You hear a slight buzzing when heading to the shower. It’s a calm sunny afternoon and you dismiss it. However, the next time you’re in the bathroom, you realize it’s getting louder. You take a look out the window and see a horde of bees. You go outside to investigate and realize they have created a hive in an opening just between a shingle and the gutter. Don’t fear, we’re here for you. Obviously, we will take care of both the shingle and gutter situation and the bee problem.

1. Seal all cracks, openings, and gaps in your roof. This allows you to have a peace of mind about not having birds or other animals creeping around your roof and crawl space.
2. Trim overhanging branches from trees in your yard. Some animals get into your home this way. Remember, overhanging branches should be at the least 10 to 12 feet away from your home.
3. Some birds and animals get into the home via the chimney. They can get trapped in there, so we advise you getting special caps or dampers in order to block chimneys.
4. In case you were wondering, mothballs do not help as animal repellents. You would be better off using a pesticide if you would like to do this on your own.

We work with you to get rid of these pests, regardless if we need to contract the work out to one of our expert partners. Remember, there are state (and federal!) laws protecting many animals. Always check with your state or federal wildlife agency before using traps or poisoning a wild animal or insects. We don’t want to harm your home or the animal itself unless it’s absolutely necessary.
